Ruta Meilutyte has won Lithuania’s first Olympic swimming medal with a gold in the 100 metres breaststroke

LONDON - Ruta Meilutyte has won Lithuania’s first Olympic swimming medal with a gold in the 100 metres breaststroke.

The 15-year-old Plymouth schoolgirl held off Rebecca Soni of USA in the closing metres of the grueling race tonight at the Aquatics Centre, finishing in 1 minute, 05.47 seconds.

She set an European record of 1:05. in the semifinals yesterday.

Soni earned the silver in 1:05.55; Satomi Suzuki of Japan took the bronze in 1:06.46.
