EAST GERMAN WOMEN IN TREMENDOUS TEAM TIME TRIM
Experts shook their heads in disbelief at the Montreal Olympics, July 19th, 1976, as the GDR women's 400 metres individual medley team won the gold medal and took nearly seven seconds off the world record.

The East German women won in 4:07.95. Backstroker Ulrike Richter clocked 1:02.23, followed by team mates Hannelore Anke (Breaststroke 1:10.15), Andrea Pollock (Butterfly 59.53) and Kornelia Ender (Freestyle 56.04). A strong American team was second in 4:14.55.

The previous record, set only two months earlier by the Dynamo Club of East Germany, was 4:13.10.
