Jenny Thompson was named the U.S. Olympic Committee Female Athlete of the Month for January, USA Swimming announced today. She won nine out of eleven first place votes in the official voting and 64% of the votes in the unofficial online poll. Thompson, who will turn 26 years old on Feb. 26, won the award based on her impressive performance at back-to-back World Cup meets in Australia. She broke the world record in the 100m individual medley and the American record in the 100m freestyle, winning all five of her events, in Sydney, Jan. 15-16. Just two days later, Thompson won four more events at the meet in Hobart. This is the third time that Thompson has been honored by the USOC as Athlete of the Month.
