Another Record Swim For Thompson

COLLEGE STATION - Another world record by Jenny Thompson (USA) in the morning session preliminaries in the 50 butterfly of 26.05, bettering her own time of 26.48 from one year ago, set the stage for this evening's final.

Unfortunately Jenny Thompson had to return to Mills College (in the San Francisco Bay area) where she is a pre-medical student to attend vital classes tomorrow. She hopes to enroll in medical school eventually. She scratched from the finals in the two events she had qualified in-100 freestyle (53.03) and the 50 butterfly.

The first event of the evening-the women's 100 freestyle resulted in an all-American sweep of the medals, with all three swimmers from the same club in Tucson, AZ. Ashley Tappin first with 54.55, Shannon Hosack second with 55.06, and Liesl Kolbisen third with 55.73.

The men's 200 freestyle was a battle between ironman Josh Davis (USA) -already a multi event medal winner yesterday and Ian Thorpe (AUS). Davis took the lead (24.14, 50.70, 1:18.07) but Thorpe pacing perfectly came on in the last 50 to win. His splits (24.85, 51.46, 1:18.21) for a final time of 1:44.65. Gustavo Borges (BRA) was third with 1:47.12. Thorpe leads the sprint free category with 42 points after three competitions.

Gary Hall (USA) won the 50 freestyle in 21.98. Fernando Scherer (BRA) second with 22.06 was actually ahead on the second length but was touched out by Hall. Gustavo Borges (BRA) third with 22.19.

The men's 1500 freetsyle was race between Thomas Lohfink (GER) who took and held the lead throughout (7:54.48 at the 800) to finish with 14:54.28 and Emiliano Brembilla (ITA) in a close second with 14:54.97 who chased and closed the gap length by length but fell short by an arm length at the finish (7:58.89 at the 800). Erik Vendt (USA) was third with 15:13.18.

Thorpe also leads in the distance category with 30 over Lohfink with 28. In the men's backstroke Riley Janes (CAN) won the 50 with 25.09. Josh Davis (USA) won the 200 with 1:54.83. Carlos Arena (MEX) was second in the 50 with 25.13 and third in the 200 with 1:57.63, all in national record times.

Jeremy Linn (USA) upset Fred deBurghgraeve (BEL) in the 100 breaststroke. His winning time of 59.45 was an American record and deBurghgraeve in second with 59.49 battled all the way to the wall. Linn had the advantage throughout the race splitting 27.70 to 28.07 for the de Burghgraeve. Yu Daqing (CHN) took third with 1:00.65. The Belgian is in the category points lead with 34.

Geoff Huegill (AUS) won the 100 fly in 52.18 in a come from behind (24.71) battle with Denis Silantiev (UKR) 52.35, who split 24.54. Sabir Muhammad (USA) was third 52.81. Huegill now has 57 points in the category lead, with Silantiev well back with 34.

Brian Johns (CAN) a 16-year-old upset the more experienced older swimmers in winning the 200 IM with 1:59.90, (26.92, 57.28, 1:32.54). It was on the freestyle leg that he overtook Philip Weiss (CAN) 2:01.23 who moved into the lead after the breaststroke leg (26.69, 57.55, 1:32.35) Robert Van Der Zant (AUS) was third 2:01.41, but that was sufficient to give him the points lead in the category with 49.

The women's 400 freestyle was a battle between winner Claudia Poll (CRC) 4:07.92 splitting (1:00.07, 2:02.59, 3:05.21) and Lindsay Benko (USA) in second 4:08.73 (1:00.08, 2:02.76, 3:06.00). Rachel Harris (AUS) in third with 4:11.69 but giving her the category points lead with 50 after three competitions.

In the women's 100 backstroke Antje Buschschulte (GER) with 100.42 held off the challenge from Beth Botsford (USA) with 1:00.61. Kelly Stefanyshyn (CAN) in third with 1:01.36. Buschschulte has the leads the category points race with 40.

In the 50 breaststroke Kristin MacGregor (USA) was first with 31.92 and Christin Petelski (CAN) won the 200 with 2:27.89. Isabel Ceballos (COL) was second in both with 32.92 and 2.29.54. With her third in the 50 Kelly Denner (AUS) has the category points lead with 33.

Hu Ning (CHN) won the 200 butterfly setting a fast pace (29.12, 1:01.62, 1:35.89) with 2:09.90. Katrin Jake (GER) in second with 2:10.77 and Lauren Stinnett (USA) third with 2:12.03. In the 50 fly Ashley Tappin (USA) won with 26.48 which would have tied the former world record but for Jenny Thompson's 26.05 in the prelims.

After three FINA World Cup competitions Hu Ning (CHN) leads in the category points race with 43.

Ning Bo (CHN) won the gold in the 400 I.M. with 4:41.74. She took the lead from start and was never challenged. (1:04.19, 2:16.83, 3:38.33). Allison Wagner (USA) was second in 4:42.60 and Carrie Burgoyne (CAN) third with 4:42.84.

Marianne Limpert (CAN) had an easy win in the 100 IM with 1:01.95 with Allison Wagner (USA) well back in second with 1:03.39. Ning Bo (CHN) was third in 1:03.83. Limpert has 40 points to lead the IM category after two competitions.
