American Dana Vollmer set a world record in the women's 100 metres butterfly winning gold at the Olympic Games in London

LONDON - American swimmer Dana Vollmer set a world record in the 100 metres butterfly on Sunday, clocking 55.98 seconds at the Olympic Games in London.

The 25-year-old Vollmer shaved 0.08 seconds off the old mark set by Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden  in 2009.
