FINA Vice President Bill Matson (NZL) has died at the age of 72, swimming's world governing body have announced

Bill Matson, the FINA Vice President, died yesterday, swimming's world governing body have announced. He was 72.

A statement from FINA said Matson's death followed the surgery he underwent during the last days of the World Championships.

Matson was a FINA Bureau Member since 1996, and became Vice President of our International Federation since 2005. Moreover, he was a very efficient Liaison with the FINA Technical Open Water Swimming Committee and presently with the FINA Masters Committee, and his action has namely been essential to the success of the FINA World Masters Championships.

He is survived by his wife Joan and two adult children and four grand children.
