Petar Stoychev and Ana Marcela Cunha won a questionable 25km open water race at the world swimming championships. Russia wins Championships Trophy

SHANGHAI - Petar Stoychev of Bulgaria and Brazilian Ana Marcela Cunha won a questionable 25km open water race at the world swimming championships.

Both races were affected by withdrawals and complaiants due to hot water temperature at Jinshan City Beach today.

Ten swimmers, including 2009 Italian World Champion Valerio Cleri, didn’t finish the male race, while six skipped this event.

Stoychev, 35, won in 5h10:39.8. Vladymir Dyatchin of Russia was second in 5h11:15.6 and Csaba Gercsak of Hungary third in 5h11:18.1.

Ana Marcela Cunha finished in 5h29:22.9, less than 3 seconds ahead of Angela Maurer of Germany (5h29:25.0) while Italy’s Alice Franco in 5h29:30.8 took bronze.

Team Russia won the Championships Trophy with 92 points. Italy placed second with 82 and Germany third with 72.
