The family of Fran Crippen, the swimmer whose death in a 10km race in the UAE last Saturday sparked inquiries into his passing, the organisation of the event and open water swimming as a sport, has released information about the funeral service of a popular man who will be much missed.

After a period of due calm, respect and mourning, focus will return to what led to the premature passing of a 26-year-old athlete who was apparently in superb physical condition, a supreme world-class athlete who, peers and coaches believe, was a victim of the conditions in which the fateful 10km race was held last Saturday, a lack of safety measures and a poor chain of command that failed to heed pre-race warnings.
