BUDAPEST – Lotte Friis of Denmark won her second gold medal of the European championships in the 1500m freestyle final in Budapest on Saturday.

The 22-year-old from Denmark, who was silver medallist for this event at last year’s Worlds, touched first in 15:59.13.

Teenager Murphy Grainne of Ireland took silver with 16:02.29, while Spain’s Erica Villaecija Garcia claimed bronze in 16:05.08.

Russian Evgeny Korotyshkin added to his 50m butterfly bronze with title in the 100m event in 51.73secs. a new Championships record.

Joeri Verlinden of the Netherlands was second in 51.82 and Polish Konrad Czerniak third in 52.16.

Federica Pellegrini powered her way to victory in the 200m freestyle in one minute, 55.45 seconds to shave 0.08 off the previous championships record of 1:56.53 she set yesterday.

“I am very happy for the performance and for swimming faster than in the semifinals, but I am not unbeatable,” she said.

Germany’s teenager Silke Lippok, the European junior champion for this event, finished second to take the silver medal in 1:56.98 while the bronze went to Hungary’s Agnes Mutina in 1:57.12.

“Just after touching the wall I thought that I did something unbelievable. I didn’t recognized to first for 150 metres,” said Lippok.

Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus set a new women’s 50m backstroke meeting record winning the European title in 27.64.

The silver went to Germany’s Daniela Samulski with 27.99 and bronze in 28.01 for Mercede Paris Minguet of France.

Fabio Scozzoli surprisingly won the gold medal in the men's 50 metres breaststroke, the second Italian gold in the championships. “When I woke up at 5.30 I thought to a medal,” he said to RAI sport television. “But I didn’t expect to improve yesterday’s time (27.46). My race is the 100 breast and thinking to today’s perfromance I should be faster in the double distance.”

Scozzoli won in a final time of 27.38 with Dragos Agache of Romania at second in 27.47 and Lennart Stekelenburg third with 27.51.

The last final held at the Alfred Hajos swimming complex during day 6, was the men’s 800m freestyle relay which gave another gold to Russia (Lobintsev, Izotov, Perunin, Sukhorukov) with 7:06.71.

German team took another silver in 7:08.13 and Paul Biedermann set the fastest performance in the world in 2010 with a 1:45.47 in the first leg, clearing the 1:45.61 clocked by Michael Phelps at the U.S. Nationals earlier this month.

France was third in a final time of 7:09.70.

In other highlights, Yuliya Efimova looked the favourite for the 50m breatstroke title as she eased to finish inside the championship record in 30.32secs in the semifinals and Frederick Bousquet set the 50m freestyle meeting record qualifying for the final in 21.36.
