BUDAPEST - Yannick Agnel anchored to France the first gold medal at the 30th LEN European championships in Budapest on Monday.
Agnel, 18, won the 400 metres freestyle in 3:46.17, the 3rd time of the year [behind Zhang Lin of China and Park Tae Hwan of South Korea] and betterd his best of 3:46.26 after he won the European Junior title last month.
"Super! I looked a perfect race for my first high level final. It was a tought race and I didn't realazed I could win," said Agnel.
He led the race from beginning to finish relegating World champion and World record holder Paul Biedermann at second place.

Agnel: 54.58, 1:52.56, 2:51.76, 3:46.17
Biedermann: 55.13, 1:53.39, 2:51.54, 3:46.30
Bronze medal went to Hungary'a Gergo Kis in a time of 3:48.14.
In other finals, Hannah Miley of Great Britain won gold in the women's 400m individual medley with a new world best time for 2010 and new Championships record of 4:33.09.
Silver and bronze medals went to Hungary's swimmers Katinka Osszu, 4:36.43 and Zsuzsanna Jakabos with 4:37.92.
Germany won the women's 400m freestyle relay in 3:37.72, ahead of Great Britain team (3:38.57) and Sweden (3:38.81).
In the men's 400 freerelay, Russia won gold in a new Champs record of 3:12.46.
France placed 2nd in 3:13.29 and Sweden 3rd in 3:15.07.
In other highlight, France's Camille Lacourt set a new Competition record for the men's 100m backstroke.
He entered the final with 52.58 second, just 0.31 more than the Europen mark set by Germany's Helge Meeuw at last Worlds in Rome.
France, Germany and Great Britain are on top of the medal tally with a gold and a silver.
